Giving it a Name
Last week, our church held a large ministry event for kids, similar to a VBS (Vacation Bible School). I have been a leader for this, but for the last few years, I have stepped aside to focus on coaching and letting others use their leadership gifts. Our children’s ministry director asked if I would be willing to just be present for a couple of hours on the first day since Mondays can be hard, so I blocked off some time to do this.
When I arrived and saw my name badge, “Solutions Director,” I laughed. I did not put in the countless hours that other volunteers had invested in this year’s event: the Bible Story director, the Games director, the Crafts director, the Music and Drama director, or other valuable leaders. At first I laughed, but then I felt very seen and appreciated. Even though I didn’t put in much time this year, the title acknowledged the countless volunteer hours I had put in over two decades of events like this. That morning, I was a calm presence who did, in fact, provide dozens of solutions for parents and volunteers on a hectic Monday morning.
Later in the day I received a message of gratitude from the children’s ministry leader, which meant a lot to me. It took almost no time or resources for her to name my position and say thanks, but to me it was a highlight of the week.
