Making it a Priority
For a long time, I had a very unreliable system for paying bills - I would hope that I remember. Most of the time, I did remember, so my unreliable system worked with about 95% efficiency, but that 5% was really causing problems. When it was finally painful enough, I created a calendar event that repeated every month, reminding me to pay the bills. I often do this before the email reminder shows up in my inbox, but for those few times that I forget, I avoid some suffering.
Putting it on my calendar made it a priority for me. Because of my success, I’ve started creating calendar events for many other things I want to be a priority, and this system has worked for me. I figure I should remember to exercise, but sometimes I don’t. Having blocked off time on my calendar is a fairly good reminder to make this happen. Maybe it’s reaching out to a friend. Maybe it’s prayer. Maybe it’s something else.
The digital calendar has been working for me, but you might have another system. It’s not really about using the perfect system as much as it is about finding a way to make things a priority.
