Magic Filter

As the seasons change, I am reminded that I need to change the air filter in our house. It’s pretty awesome that the furnace and air conditioner recycle the air in our home to keep us comfortable, and it’s nice that there is a filter to clean the air and keep junk out of the expensive machines. Things work better if a filter is cleaning the air. It would be great if a magic filter did this work and we didn’t have to replace our temporary filters every few months.

Have you ever had negative thoughts cycle through your head with no filter to catch them? It feels like a small track where the same series of ideas come up over and over and over again. Once you are conscious of it happening, you try to fix the cycle by adding a new or better thought to fix the negative cycle, but the same series of thoughts come right back, and you feel stuck. Having a furnace filter to screen out the negative thoughts would be nice. Researchers have found such a magic filter: gratitude.

There is healing power in being thankful for what you have and where you are, even if there is more that you would like. Taking an inventory of the things you appreciate about where you are can interrupt those negative thoughts and restore your brain. Those thoughts of thankfulness can change the brain cell circuits to create new patterns, leading to deeper joy and peace. It feels too simple to be true, but it works and is powerful.
