Mind Extension through the Body
A little while ago, I learned about different ways a person can extend their mind. The world is complex and fast-paced, while our brains are trapped in a dark space in our heads, so our brains use different resources to make sense and make progress. Since learning about these techniques, I have noticed and analyzed how I use them. I would love for you to join the fun, so I’ll spend a little time with each of you.
A third way that people extend their minds is through their bodies. Of the four strategies for mind extension, this one is the least intuitive for me, but I am doing my best to learn. The best example I can give from my life is using body motions or actions to help me memorize something. My grade school had us learn Bible verses each day, and sometimes I would add actions to the complex parts to help me remember the more challenging ones. “I lift my eyes to the mountains; where does my help come from?” Some motions just make sense, so if I move my body in a certain way every time I say the words, my body helps me remember as much as my brain. There is a lot of work in how our mind and body work together using the term interoception, and I am just beginning to learn more about it. I can confidently say that our minds and bodies are more connected than we want to admit, and owning this is powerful. When I make a strong pose with my body, it affects how I think. When I extend my arm to shake hands with a new person, I naturally feel some connection to that person. Even getting sick can be a conversation between our mind and body.
This is not an area that I have mastered, but I’m on a journey to learn more about the connection between my mind and body and how to use that connection well. If you want to learn more about extending your mind in different ways, including your body, please Contact Us.
