Mind Extension through Spaces
A little while ago, I learned about different ways a person can extend their mind. The world is complex and fast-paced, while our brains are trapped in a dark space in our heads, so our brains use different resources to make sense and make progress. Since learning about these techniques, I have noticed and analyzed how I use them. I would love for you to join the fun, so I’ll spend a little time with each of you.
A second way that people extend their minds is through spaces. How we arrange our office or home is an extension of our mind. One of the first things I do in the morning is make coffee; if something is not in the right place, it throws me off track. My wife moved the coffee filters to a different cabinet, and my 20% awake brain wanted to curl up and cry rather than figure out where the filters were. Another way this happens is with a desk. Some people have a very clean and empty desk, while others have a more “cluttered” workspace. Maybe it’s not just clutter, but the different spaces allow more mental workspace; it reminds us of various tasks or priorities because of the arrangement. It is another way of extending the brain.
There is no right or wrong way to use the space unless it affects other people and their ability to use the space for their work. It’s not so much about efficiency; it’s more about understanding how you work and how to best use the gifts that you have been given.
