Spaces
Our front porch has two plastic wicker rocking chairs and a little table. We set those chairs there with a few other decorations to make the front of the house look inviting. I think I would enjoy sitting there, but I don’t. There seem to be enough other places around our house to sit, so this is never really an option that I think about. Sometimes, it makes me wonder if I could be using that space better, if I should make use of that space more often, or if there are other spaces that I could pay attention to.
Maybe you have one or more places like this around your house. Maybe there are other places in your community that you could use more often - a walking trail near your house, a park bench in your neighborhood, or a street that you typically don’t travel. There are plenty of places you can pay to go and have an experience, but there is an abundance of places you could go to for free; you just need to realize that they are there.
To further the experience, you could take time to investigate that space more thoroughly. I have sat down to weed a flower bed and been amazed at all the different plants that grow in a small area, the insects and other animals that leave their mark, and the variety of stones and soil. On one hand, I know that flowerbed because I know it’s location and general appearance, but on the other hand there are a lot more details than I realize which appear if I just take the time to notice them.
What is true of physical spaces is also true of other spaces as well. This could be a relationship, a project, or a dilemma. You could ask yourself if you are making the best use of this relationship, if there are more details to the project than you are aware of, and what alternatives to the dilemma could exist. Take some time to enjoy the physical spaces around you and notice the other ones, as well. If you would like to have a thinking partner to explore ‘spaces’ around you, please Contact Us.
