Support

Almost a century ago, there was a pastor who spoke about how being spiritually exhausted was to be expected because leaders provided spiritual nourishment for people until they are able to be fed by God. https://utmost.org/are-you-exhausted-spiritually/ That concept has encouraged me when I have felt exhausted, knowing that God is using me as a conduit to nourish others. Pastors are called to provide this spiritual food for others, and they need support to continue to do this amazing work. In my conversations with pastors this past summer, many of the pastors spoke of their need for more support to do this work. The following includes many of the thoughts and feelings of pastors worldwide.

Spiritual Support

While there are different ministries and services to support pastors in their work, knowing this does not diminish the feelings when a pastor feels spiritually starved. It is human nature to miss or even hide from what we need most; it is clear that pastors are asking for support.

There is little pastoral leadership, and this needs to change.

Some pastors were subtle, but others were more direct.

The spiritual support for pastors is a great big pile of poop.

Many of these feelings came from pastors who feel a great deal of support when learning in fellowship with other pastors but realized something was missing once they were in the mission field by themselves.

Seminaries give head knowledge. They are didactic but not discipling.

Some pastors did not feel support from their leaders.

The district presidents are supposed to be pastors to the pastors, but this is flawed.

The district presidents are advocates for the congregations. They are not advocates for the pastors.

Local Support Groups

Most denominational church bodies have some structure to encourage pastors to connect with each other in a circuit or local chapter. The only way this system works is when there is trust and safety, but many pastors cannot get what they need from these groups.

My circuit does nothing to support me, and they judge me. There is a deep competition between pastors.

Pastors often don't have a safe place to think through and try ideas. They don't always feel safe going to the circuit or district leadership.

There is a threat of judgment, even in circuit meetings.

Some pastors are frustrated with their local group, but others find another way to get what they need.

I have people outside my circuit and state I can rely on. I'm cordial with those in my circuit, but we're not able to work together.

I don't need the circuit meetings.

The efforts to provide support are commendable, but it would be beneficial to have some accountability to ensure the effectiveness and safety of pastors in these groups.

Pastoral care is forced and ineffective. Trust is important, trust beyond all else.

Dwindling Numbers

Support is needed, especially since so many pastors are over the age of 55.

I'm looking for flexibility to help meet our needs. I am the only one in our circuit who won't be retired in five to ten years.

There are fewer new pastors, but that is not the only reason the number of young pastors is low. Many young pastors are leaving for other reasons.

My seminary class of 120 four years ago is dwindling. Five were asked to leave, and at least 20 more have resigned. This is all within four years.

Often, it is hard for new pastors to ask for help.

New pastors don't listen to anyone. Some programs connect pastors to help knock off the sharp edges in a safe way. 3rd year pastors start to ask for help.

These young pastors need support to sustain their ministry efforts.

Keeping the joy is hard. Often, I feel no joy, and it is hard to do the job.

Game Plan

It’s one thing if the game plan is not working, but it’s another if there is no game plan at all. People need other people, especially leaders of leaders. Pastors need support.

Who is dividing law and gospel for the pastors? Who is helping with the long game?

Here is a humble admission from a pastor who was quietly reflecting.

I don't let others pastor me.

Coming up with a plan for support is critical for all people, including pastors.

Everyone should have their own board of advisors.

Closing Thoughts

While a coach is not the cure-all answer for all pastoral support questions, it is a powerful part of having a support system in place. Nourishing others with spiritual gifts is dangerous for a person who is starving for relational nutrients. When I am being coached, I feel deeply seen, encouraging me to handle the challenges in my life.
